First: which kind of "cipher" do you have?
Half the confusion around ciphers comes from guides written for a different system. Check your item's exact name against this table before following any advice:

Two free ciphers are already in your mail
The Second Wave launch rewards (live since August 1, celebrating 500,000+ Gyldhunters) mailed every player an Ashen Cipher and an Abyssal Cipher, plus 500 Soul Coins. Claim the mail before September 1, 2026 (00:00 UTC) or it expires.
- Ashen Cipher: hand it to Sigrid (in the Victory Wine area of camp). She's the only NPC who adds a bonus — a Ripple Gem used in equipment forging. Any other NPC pays the standard reward only.
- Abyssal Cipher: no confirmed NPC pairing — check its clue words against our decipher NPC table before handing it over. A wrong match still pays the base reward; only the bonus is lost.
- Requirement: the Decipher option unlocks at character level 5. If no NPC will take your cipher yet, that's why — it's not a bug.
Where ciphers drop (farming)
Beyond the mail freebies, ciphers are Legendary-quality scrolls in the ordinary loot table — no single boss or container owns them. Systematic looting beats chasing one spot:
- Locked chests — the most reliable placed source on every map.
- Purple-branded (marked) enemies — and the containers they guard. Worth detouring for when your gear can survive the fight.
- Unidentified items — always check these before discarding; any of them can resolve into a cipher.

What ciphers actually pay
Every reward cipher pays a base reward from any NPC, plus a bonus only from its matching NPC (that's what the clue words are for — full table in the decipher guide). What we know about the payouts:
- Mostly Gyldenblod. Community-reported odds for the Ashen Cipher put the common outcome at roughly 450 Gyldenblod (~90% of the time), with a 1,000 Gyldenblod tier above it.
- Reported rare prizes include the Golden Woodling Head, the Strike It Rich emote, exclusive outfits, and — at lottery odds — things like Steam keys and a lifetime season pass. Treat these as long-shot bonuses, not a farming goal.
- The NPC bonus is separate from the base roll — matching Sigrid for the Ashen Cipher adds her Ripple Gem on top of whatever the base payout is.
About those old "cipher" guides (Gylden Rush)
The June 2026 Open Beta ran a limited Gylden Rush event (June 15–22) with its own ciphers — Golden, Mantra, Ancestral, Mystic, Bloodbound and an event-version Elder Edict — exchangeable for cosmetics, Gyldenblod, game keys and physical prizes. That event is over with no announced return. If a guide tells you to farm "Golden Ciphers" or describes a cipher exchange shop, it was written for the beta and no longer applies.
Cipher keys are a different system
The Dried Flower Knot looks like a cipher, gets called a cipher, and is neither deciphered nor rewarded. It's a key: it opens the Einherjar Mode Mist Lord challenge (live since the August 6 update), which drops relics and high-tier forging materials at elevated rates. Don't hand it to a camp NPC — save it for the boss.

How do I get more ciphers?
Two are free in your mail until September 1, 2026. After that, farm locked chests, purple-branded enemies, and unidentified items — Brandrgarde has the higher reported drop chance, and Hallowgrove's Einherjar Ship Grave, Supreme Hall and Divine Anchor areas are the popular spots.
Who should I give the Ashen Cipher to?
Sigrid, in the Victory Wine area of camp. She's the only NPC who attaches a bonus (a Ripple Gem for forging). Anyone else pays the standard reward only.
What happens if I give a cipher to the wrong NPC?
You still get the base reward — only the matching-NPC bonus is lost. The cipher is consumed either way, so check the clue words first (our decipher guide has the full table).
I found a cipher but died before extracting. Is it gone?
Yes — ciphers found in raids behave like any other loot: extract with them or lose them. The two mail ciphers are the exception; they're account-delivered with no extraction risk.
Will the Gylden Rush ciphers come back?
Nothing has been announced. The event ended June 22, 2026, and its ciphers (Golden, Mantra, Ancestral, Mystic, Bloodbound) are unobtainable. Any guide describing them reflects the Open Beta, not the launch version.
